
Dr. Madeline B. Quiamco
Dr. Madeline B. Quiamco is Dean of Graduate School, faculty member, and senior researcher at the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC). She provides academic leadership to AIJC’s faculty members, guides graduate students in the conduct of their thesis research, and teaches courses in journalism and communication, technical writing, and knowledge management. She also designs and implements R & D projects for a diverse group of clients such as UNESCO, UNICEF. UNDP, IDRC, USAID, DENR, DOE, Plan Philippines, the Philippine e-Center Network, the Agriculture Credit Policy Council (ACPC), and some local government units (LGUs), among others.
She has had almost 20 years of experience in design of communication interventions and development of associated IEC materials for agriculture development and sustainable agriculture. She designed the concept, scripted, and produced “The Making of the Water-Smart Rice Farmer,” a documentation video on the Transfer of Technologies on Water Savings (TTEWS) project of IRRI, NIA, and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) as well as a video trilogy on the development of the Philippine irrigation system supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and NIA. She designed and developed the contents of the Online Course on Scientific Writing and Presentation Skills for Rice Scientists funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and pre-tested the IT-based course with scientists at the Directorate of Rice Research in Hyderabad, India. She also developed and edited learning programs in Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) for the IRRI Knowledge Bank. She designed, conceptualized, and edited a training manual, 3 field guides, and 3 technical bulletins on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Rice-based Cropping Systems for PhilRice and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Among the print materials she has conceptualized and written are the coffee table book, “Outstanding Filipino Women Research Managers and scientists in Agriculture and Natural Resources,” a compilation of personality profiles of 21 outstanding women in Philippine agriculture research, among others.
In total, Dr. Quiamco has designed and developed materials for 43 capacity building interventions she has implemented for 7 organizations in the Philippines as well as for the 12 courses taught to about 200 rice scientists at venues in IRRI and 10 other countries.
Dr. Quiamco holds a PhD and an M Sc degree in development communication from the University of the Philippines-Los Banos (UPLB) and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Silliman University, where she graduated magna cum laude.
