International Conference on Terrorism and Media

 

An international conference on Terrorism and Media was held in Manila, Philippines last May 1 and 2, 2002 as part of the celebration of the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day Celebration. The event was attended by some 120 international and local delegates who discussed and assessed the global impact of terrorism and media and presented case studies from different countries. The meeting was concluded with the delegates unanimously adopting a resolution that calls on governments and parties to conflicts all over the world to respect press freedom. Prior to the international conference, the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines sponsored a round table meeting on the same topic. Held last April 3, 2002 in Manila, the pre-conference was attended by journalists, members of the academe and press freedom rights activist who "revisited" old age issues such as adequacy of media coverage, safety and protection of journalists, as well as legal and ethical issues. The World Press Freedom day Celebration last May 3, 2002 was held at the MalacaƱang Palace with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura as guests of honor. Highlights of the event was the conferment of the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to Geoffrey Nyarota, the courageous editor of the independent newspaper - the Daily News of Zimbabwe and the awarding of the Posthumous Award to Wall Street Journal reporter, Daniel Pearl.
