Dr. Rustica C. Carpio

RUSTICA C. CARPIO is a name respected in Philippine arts and letters and in the academe. A noted performing artist of stage-film-television, a prize-winning playwright and stage director, a writer who has to her credit over 200 articles, critiques, poems, plays, and short stories published in the Philippines and abroad, she has authored/co-authored over a dozen books on literature, speech and communication and has represented the country in international conferences.

Among her most outstanding accomplishments in, and contributions to, communication and mass media are her founding of the Bachelor in Mass Communication at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 1968 and her being co-founder of its Master in Mass Communication in 1972.

Rustica C. Carpio is presently holder of the Manila Bulletin professorial chair in Journalism at the PUP Graduate School and the Albertus Magnus.professorial chair in Humanities at the UST Graduate School. She has represented the country in international conferences the latest of which was the Pacific Telecommunications Council's 22nd annual inter-national conference with the theme "PTC 2000; A New Vision for the 2lst Century" held in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S. A. on January 30-February 2, 2000.

Dr. Carpio's most outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to communication and mass media include:

• Founder of the Bachelor in Mass Communication (1968) at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila; co- founder-of the-Master in Mass Communication (1972)-Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila;
• One of the organizers of the College of Languages and Mass Communications
• Organizer and first chairperson (1987) - Polytechnic University of the Philippines;
• First dean of PUP's College of Languages and Mass Communications (1989);
• Conceptualized the Claro M. Recto Auditorium (1987) and the Mass Communication Center (1987) which was started through Senate Bill 1791 authored by Senator Orlando S. Mercado based on the position paper/ proposal of Dr. Carpio;

Dr. Carpio was thrice a dean. She was Dean of Student Affairs at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (1978) and also became dean (1993) of PUPs Graduate School. At the PLM, she was one of the founders of the former College of Communication Arts (1972) and was its College Secretary. She was also chairman of the Department of Speech and Drama, Radio and Television.

Also at PLM, she served as Chairman, Division of Humanities and Mass Communication, when the College of Comunication Arts was merged with the Collage of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph. D., major in Literature, meritissimus, University of Santo Tomas as Zarzuela Foundation of the Philippines research grantee and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila fellow; an M. A. in education major in Speech education, from New York University, U. S. A.; as Fulbright grantee and International House scholar; and A. B. major in English, magna cum laude, Manuel L. Quezon University.

She has an Associate in Commercial Science diploma with honors from The Philippine College of Commerce (now PUP), and was a Unesco fellow in Dramatic Arts at the National School of Drama and Asian Theatre Institute in India.

Her over 40 national and international honors include:

• One of the Ten Outstanding Women of the Philippines for 1968 (Federation Internacional de Abogadas--FIDA Phil.) for achievements in the performing arts;
• Woman of Distinction by the WORLD WHO'S WHO OF WOMEN for 1982 (International Biographical Center in England);
• Woman of Distinction for 1997 (Soroptimist International Bulacan Region Paombong Chapter) for accomplishments in education, performing arts, culture and humanitarian services;
• Green and Gold Artist for 1998 (Par Eastern University) for achievements in the performing arts;
• Most Outstanding Mass Communication Professor for 1998-99--the first Gawad Sining Sine given by the Samahan ng Mga Dalubguro ng Pang-Madlang Komunikasyon (PASADO).

She is one of America's newest songwriters. Her poems are now being arranged for orchestration, vocals and recording by four recording companies for U. S. and later world distribution. Dean Carpio is included in the Cultural Center of the Philippines published ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILIPPINE ARTS, Vol. 7 (Theater).
