The Media Museum features the history and evolution of communication in the Philippines. It also includes luminaries in communication and mass media, media trends, and electronic photo display of communication artifacts and landmarks.

Ely D. Gomez

Ely D. Gomez is currently a professor of the College of Development Communication (CDC), UPLB.

  • developed the concept of development or community broadcasting,
  • pioneered in several courses particularly in development broadcasting, and
  • was instrumental in the founding and strengthening of DZLB, a development-oriented educational radio station of the University of the Philippines, Los Banos (UPLB).

She also helped develop the concept of participatory broadcasting.

Among his awards are:

  • Gawad Cecilio Lopez Award for her efforts to promote Filipinization
  • 1986 Most Distinguished Teacher and Distinguished Researcher of UPLB's Institute of Development Communication
  • 1989 Outstanding Teacher of UPLB's College of Agriculture
  • 1999 Outstanding Teacher of the College of Development Communication

Ely D. Gomez is recognized as one of the local experts in development broadcasting. Gomez developed the concept of development or community broadcasting which served as the foundation of the College of Development Communication's (CDC) community broadcasting courses.

She has contributed greatly to the growth of the College curriculum by pioneering in several courses, particularly in development broadcasting.

She was instrumental in the founding and strengthening of DZLB, University of the Philippines, Los Banos' (UPLB) development-oriented educational radio station. Through her efforts to involve rural women in the conceptualization and implementation of their very own development-oriented radio stations, she also helped develop the concept of participatory broadcasting. She is currently the chair of the Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunication of CDC, UPLB.

Although her greatest area of contribution in communication is development broadcasting, she has continued to pursue a wide range of interests and concerns in communication in general. These areas include: the role of communication in technology transfer, communication policies and planning, science communication, Filipinization and language studies; communication research and training, community communication, and gender and communication.

Her concerns and research interests are best communicated in the various books she has authored and co-authored. She has seven published books including, "Enhancing Rural Women's Participation in Development: The Case of Women's Radio (Philippines)". Among her works also are articles in refereed and non-refereed journals, papers, course syllabi, book chapters, training manual, and monographs.

UPLB, honored her in 1986 as the Most Distinguished Teacher and also as the Distinguished Researcher of the then Institute of Development Communication, and in 1989, as Outstanding Teacher of the College of Agriculture. More recently, in 1999, she was once more chosen as Outstanding Teacher of the College of Development Communication.

In 1996, the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino of the UP system also honored her with the Gawad Cecilio Lopez Award for her efforts to promote Filipinization.

Ely D. Gomez is a professor of the College of Development Communication (CDC), UPLB. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Education from the University of the Philippines and her PhD. in Educational Media from Michigan State University.
