In partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) promotes the teaching of labor migration by universities and colleges in the Philippines.

Reporting on Labor Migration:

AIJC and ILO, in collaboration with the Technical Committee for Journalism of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), developed the course syllabus “Reporting on Labor Migration.” Nine journalism educators from eight higher education institutions (HEIs) completed the AIJC-ILO training program on teaching the course, and seven educators pilot-taught the course as an elective in the journalism program of their respective HEIs.

These HEIs include: University of the Philippines – Diliman, Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Main, Lyceum of the Philippines – Manila, Colegio De San Lorenzo, Kalayaan College, Cavite State University – Main, and University of San Jose – Recoletos.

Communicating Labor Migration:

The AIJC-ILO partnership also collaborated with the Association of Development Communication Educators and Practitioners (ADCEP) Philippines in developing the course syllabus “Communicating Labor Migration.” After completing a training program on how to teach the course conducted by ADCEP, AIJC and ILO, eleven ADCEP educators in ten HEIs pilot-taught the course by integrating it in their respective development communication courses.

These schools are: Ateneo de Naga University, Batangas State University, Benguet State University, Isabela State University, Northwest Samar State University, University of Antique, West Visayas State University, Palompon Institute of Technology, Bukidnon State University, and University of Southern Mindanao.

Covering Migration as Community News:

The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) has also partnered with AIJC and ILO in promoting the reportage and coverage of migration and labor migration by community newspapers nationwide, with the conduct of online seminars on migration issues for PPI member-publications.

ILO has also supported the annual PPI Community Press Awards through the awarding of winners in the “Best in Reporting on Migration Issues” category among the daily and weekly newspapers.
