This module is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct data gathering and research. It will explore the theoretical foundations of communication research, research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and the application of research findings to real-world policy challenges.

Session 1: Introduction to Communication Research

  • Definition and scope of communication research
  • The role of communication research in policy formulation
  • Key theoretical frameworks (e.g., agenda-setting, framing, social cognitive theory)

Session 2: Research Methodology

  • Research design (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Data collection methods (surveys, interviews, focus groups, content analysis, observation)
  • Sampling techniques
  • Ethical considerations in research

Session 3: Data Analysis

  • Quantitative data analysis (descriptive statistics, inferential statistics)
  • Qualitative data analysis (coding, thematic analysis)
  • Data visualization techniques

Session 4: Applying Communication Research to Policy

  • Identifying policy problems and opportunities
  • Developing evidence-based policy recommendations
  • Evaluating the impact of communication policies and interventions
  • Advocacy and public engagement strategies

Activities and final output

These sessions will include activities such as:

  • Case studies to analyze real-world case studies of communication research and policy impact
  • Group discussions where participants engage in discussions on current policy issues and the role of communication research.
  • Research projects to conduct independent research projects, including literature reviews, data collection, analysis, and report writing
  • Workshop on writing policy briefs summarizing research findings and providing recommendations
  • Present research findings and policy recommendations to diverse audience.

    The final output will include a research project proposal.
