Gender-sensitive Technical Writing

Inclusive Words, Empowered Voices
As the language inevitably evolves, people are also becoming more aware of the importance of gender inclusivity. Outdated conventions in technical writing that assume a reader’s gender based on pronouns like “he/him/his” are no longer acceptable. Technical writers must be sensitive to the reader’s identity and use language that is gender-fair to communicate procedures and information effectively. It is crucial to break down biases and discrimination related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) by using gender-inclusive language. This type of language is socially inclusive and combats sexist language, which is inherently discriminatory and biased against certain individuals or groups.

The Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication – Professional Development Program (AIJC-PDP) recognizes the need for professionals to sharpen their gender-inclusive technical writing skills. The AIJC-PDP offers an online training program that helps professionals create technical materials that are free from outdated misogynistic and discriminatory language. By championing gender inclusivity in their workplace and in the materials they produce, professionals can promote a more equitable and inclusive society.

With this training, participants can learn how to communicate procedures and information in a way that is respectful and sensitive to the reader’s holistic identity. The AIJC training program empowers professionals to break down biases and discrimination related to SOGIE and to create materials that promote gender equality.
